Council suspends refuse collections again
WASTE collections across Havant were again suspended as icy conditions in many sideroads left civic chiefs with no option but to instruct crews to stay off the roads today (Monday).
Staff were diverted to help Hampshire County Council's clear-up operation across town centres and at the borough's community facilities in a bid to make life easier for pedestrians and particularly, the elderly.
Shopping precints, Havant's bus and railway stations and medical centres across the borough were at the centre of a big council clear-up during the day as many people went back to work for the first time since last week's blizzards.
In addition staff were seconded to help the "Meals on Wheels" service and will collect grit on behalf of the county council.
Council spokeswoman Jo Humphries said: "Over the weekend conditions have only slightly improved and while many of the main roads are accessible, the side roads are still frozen and covered in snow.
"These conditions continue to make it too dangerous for vehicles and team members to collect wheeled bins and Havant Borough Council has therefore suspended normal frontline service provision, including waste and recycling collections for today."
The situation was being assessed throughout the day and further changes will be posted on the council website at www.havant.gov.uk
A decision will be taken on Tueday's services early tomorrow morning depending on the conditions.
