Charity concert to keep Havant advice service

NOSTALGIA will be plentiful when a charity night is held to keep a vital service open in Havant.

The Langstone Big Band is donating its services to help Age Concern’s Information and Advice Centre in Market Parade.

A concert with music from the 1940s is being staged at Hayling Island Community Centre on Friday, September 28 from 7pm to 9.30pm.

Jan Gough, manager of the Age Concern centre, said: ‘This special event is being held especially to raise funds to help Age Concern Hampshire maintain a presence in the borough beyond March 2013.

‘I must say a huge thank you to Steve Croney and his big band, who are donating their service free of charge.’

The centre has hit a financial crisis after its funding was pulled by Hampshire County Council.

However, in April the volunteers were given some breathing space when the centre won a £70,000 grant from the government’s Advice Services Fund.

This cash will keep the centre going for another year.

Mrs Gough said: ‘Over the past year we have dealt with 4,618 age-related enquiries, mainly from the borough of Havant, and not only from older people, but also their friends, families, carers and others interested in the care of the elderly, which indicates the value that people place on this free advice service.’

She said fundraising will be vital for the future of the service.

Tickets for the concert are £5.

Mrs Gough added: ‘We would love young people to come along and see how their great grandparents enjoyed a night out – and we would love to see guests in 1940s costume, but it is not compulsory.’

Tickets can be bought at the community centre or call Age Concern on (023) 9247 2452.
