AN INDEPENDENT store is taking part in a national campaign to celebrate bookshops.
Publishers, bookshops and authors have collaborated to form a campaign called Books are My Bag to promote bookshops.
The Hayling Island Bookshop has decorated its windows, will be giving away canvas bags and will be running a competition to win a £50 book token.
The campaign was formed after research showed that bookshops still account for 40 per cent of all book sales.
Around 100 high profile authors, broadcasters, models, sports stars, actors, politicians, chefs, journalists and comedians will lend their image to the campaign, to be photographed with the Books are My Bag canvas bag.
Owner of The Hayling Island Bookshop Marie Telford said: ‘This initiative is celebrating bookshops large and small, chain or independent and asks everyone who loves books to join in and show their support. Reading is one of life’s little pleasures and our nation’s bookshops provide a vital part of our high street, our community and our culture.’
The Hayling Island Bookshop is also running a programme of author events this autumn including Portsmouth BookFest, An
Evening With Pam Ayres and events in over 20 schools.
