Cause of Hayling Island flat fire being investigated

FIRE officers were yesterday investigating the cause of a flat fire in Hayling Island.

Three appliances – two from Hayling Island and one from Havant – were called to the Seafront area at about 12.35am on Tuesday.

When they arrived they found a fire in a third-floor flat.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire involved a mattress in the property.

Around 16 firefighters helped put out the blaze using two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet.

Watch manager David Hodge, who attended the incident, said no-one was in the property when the fire took hold.

He said: ‘The firefighters did their usual job to contain the fire and the damage.’
