Book reveals yachts links with Nazis
THE author of a book about the colourful history of a yacht once owned by a Nazi leader will be signing copies of the tome.
Valerie Langrish-Warner, whose family owned Warner Holidays on Hayling Island, has just published Carina, The Yacht That Refused to Die.
She got the idea for the book when researching the whereabouts of her husband's old motor yacht, Fifi Carey, which he kept berthed in Langstone Harbour.
She discovered it had once been owned by Hermann Goering, and it transpired that the Nazi had been presented with a replacement by the nation in 1936.
The leader of the Luftwaffe during World War Two, who masterminded the bombing of Britain, named it the Carin II.
It was requisitioned in 1945, handed over to the Royal Navy, renamed HMS Royal Albert and used as flagship to the Rhine Flotilla.
The author will sign copies of her book at the URC Church Small Hall, Elm Grove, Hayling Island, on Tuesday, May 11, from 5pm to 7pm.
Tickets are available from The Hayling Island Bookshop on 9246 6620.
