Anger as hooligans trash play area

KIDS and staff at a children's nursery were left upset and angry after vandals trashed a play area, tipping over tanks containing frogs' spawn used to hatch tadpoles.

Play items were tipped over and tables turned upside down with other items either being destroyed or damaged during an orgy of mayhem in the grounds of Child's Play, in St Andrew's Road, during the night of June 2.

Child's Play owner Sue Bailey had to keep the children in doors while waiting for police to visit the scene, but was disappointed that they had to wait four hours before an officer – the area's PCSO – was free.

She told the Islander: "I was disappointed nobody wanted to come and see the damage after we were told the police did not think it was worth sending a forensic team to the scene to search for clues."

And she revealed her staff who stayed late to clear up the mess were taunted by a group of youths who hid in undergrowth crowing that they had been responsible.

Sue said: "We called the police but again by the time they could attend it was too late."

Anyone with information about the incident can call Hayling police on 0845 0454545 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111.
