20mph zones to be piloted in Hayling Island and Fareham to cut down accidents

NEW 20mph limits are set to be tested in Hayling Island and Fareham.

Hampshire County Council has chosen West Town, Hayling, and Wallington village to pilot a £250,000 scheme to reduce the speed of vehicles.

A total of 10 areas in the county are set to get the new limits.

The speed limits are set to come in next spring after a consultation with residents.

Councillor Mel Kendal, who is in charge of transport in Hampshire, said: ‘For the pilot schemes to be successful, it is essential that local people support the introduction of 20mph speed restrictions. In the autumn we will be sending residents in the 10 locations a questionnaire to complete and return it to us, so that we know the views of local people.

‘Department for Transport guidance states that generally, 20mph speed limits should be self-enforcing.

‘The police are unlikely to treat enforcement as a priority in the residential 20mph areas and so we will need the support of residents through their participation in Community Speed Watch programmes.’

The 20mph speed limits will be indicated in the pilot areas using roadside signs and 20mph road markings.
