The great cat debate

GRETA Ward's letter "supporting" cats is both confused and inaccurate.
She states that cats kill through instinct and not for pleasure, but anyone who has seen a cat toying with a mouse or small bird knows that this is not the case.

Cats enjoy playing with their prey before killing them.
She also compares cats with
wild tigers, but this is a nonsensical comparison.

Tigers are wild animals that kill to eat - cats are domesticated creatures, kept for the pleasure by humans and fed by humans.

Mrs Ward also makes the ridiculous statement that "a bit of poo... will do the garden good".

What nonsense, cats damage other people's gardens and frequently mess in sand or gravel where children play.

Cats also have a detrimental effect on the small bird population, particularly when fledglings are learning to fly.

No one should suggest that all cats should be exterminated, but neither should they be held up as wonderful natural animals.

Cats are domesticated animals, often flea-infested, kept for man's pleasure and nothing else.

There are far too many cats around and if people want to keep these animals as pets they should restrict the number to one per household.

If they want more, then their cats should be kept in the house and not allowed to wander in other people's gardens and mess elsewhere.
