Speed trap was dangerous

Published Date: 11 August 2008
On June 5 at between 8am and 8.15am, I was on my way to work, when as I entered West Lane, I and another motorist encountered what I presume to be a police officer on the left-hand side of the road.
There was a car in front of me and I could see ahead a man with a motorbike parked on the side of the road.

I prepared to slow down and checked my mirrors for any cars behind me and ahead, as the position of the man would mean we would have to pul
l out to avoid him.

There is no pavement on that side of the road and just a big green hedge behind the man.

I thought perhaps he may have broken down as it was a dangerous place to park up.

To my surprise as I approached it appeared to be a police officer stood on the road side pointing a black object at me and I presume the other cars as well.

To say it startled me is putting it mildly, not only was I meant to keep an eye on the road but avoid hitting this policeman, and not even being sure it was a police officer?

It even crossed my mind that it was a man pointing a gun at me!

That may sound extreme but giving the state of crime these days, you never know anymore.

What made me think it was not a policeman was the stupid dangerous place he was parked up and had placed himself.

In all my years of driving this is the first time I have seen a stupid reckless piece of behaviour by an officer of the law. He could have caused an accident.

If he wanted to trap speeding motorists then he should have parked further up the lane where the cars drive so fast, and often recklessly, and it would be safer for him.

Where he was, cars could see him and would have slowed down to avoid hitting him. I feel so strongly about this. He not only put himself at risk but motorists as well.

Are the police all so desperate these days to try and catch speeding motorists they now go about it in such a dangerous and reckless manner?
