I HAVE refrained from commenting on the proposals for Hayling Seafront before examining them in more detail
I find the proposition of housing at Beachlands and ferry absurd on traffic grounds if nothing else.
The idea of a new play area opposite Bound lane/ retirement flats seems inappropriate "nice?" for the occupants. A campsite opposite Alexandra Ave
nue is crazy.
There are two things of any merit - acknowledgement of the need for transport link to the ferry, something for windsurfers will additionally recognise the island being the birthplace of the sport."
Interestingly, the plans exhibited at Hayling Library did not include the appendices - a deliberate omission?
I subsequently obtained them from the borough council, who belatedly then put a copy into the Library.
They make interesting reading – for instance only six of the 25 stakeholders listed were Islanders.
It seems the land train is impracticable without significant roadworks. Some regular public transport to the ferry is however desirable and long overdue.
The ferry probably being the undervalued transport link in the south.
I understand from people who attended the residents' association meeting the general mood of the audience scepticism and disbelief that the proposals should have seen the light of day - let alone the council should spend £30,000 in preparing the plan.
One of the presenters said the intention was not to increase tourism but to attract a "better class of tourist" - a remark which needs challenging.
Comments regarding traffic problems were brushed aside as insignificant and an exaggeration - there being no problems currently.
As usual the presenters said they were "listening" but were not hearing. Again decisions first, consultation a very poor second, is the order of the day.
